Christmas Poem
2013
Dashing through the rain
In a Porsche cabriolet
To the stores I go,
To find a video game;
A couple rings or so,
A lifting glove or two,
A toy for Ticoman,
A gift for Mike and you.
I do it in one day, from 7 to 2 pm,
For that’s when all the sales go on
What happens after then?
The sales tags go away,
The bargains disappear,
And all that’s left upon the shelves
Is pricey and too dear.
Oh, slashing rain, wallet pain,
It’s Christmas time of year
I hope that you can put it all
Behind you when it’s clear
That Christmastime is not the time
To quibble and deny
That Christ was born,
That hope has come,
The Star is drawing nigh.
It’s easy to forget
When you are getting wet,
Or the snowplows bury you,
Or when you get the flu,
That now the time has come
For joy and laughs and rum,
To gather with your friends and have
Some good old family fun!
We’ll drink champagne and punch,
Play Scrabble and then munch
On fudge and chips and buns and dips
And we’ll all call it lunch.
Oh! Falling snow, candles glow,
Now you’re thinking right,
Let’s all have a good old time
And dance with joy tonight!
We really miss you all,
We hope you miss us, too,
Come to see us when you can,
For here the skies are blue!
The weather it is great,
The temp is sixty-eight,
Not a speck of snow in sight,
Come visit us tonight!
Oh! Christmastime,
Glass of wine,
Gifts and presents, too!
Blessings be for you from me
And all us Schmidts, to you!

Wish You Were Here
by
Linda S. Schmidt (1999)
Michael and Justin and Patrick and I,
And Alana, too, thought we’d like to say “Hi!”
And wish all of you “Merry Christmas, good cheer!”
We love you all madly, wish you were here.
Wish you were here to see our big tree
And eat candy and cookies, play cards and go see
All of the lights and the holiday madness
That goes with the season; just think of the gladness
That we would be feeling if we could wake up on Christmas Day morn
And see all of our family, old folks and newborn,
And friends, too, just think of it! All of us there,
With sleep in our eyes and knots in our hair,
Pajamas and slippers and warm robes of red,
Waiting for someone to get out of bed.
And after the presents, a glorious mess,
With ribbons and scraps strewn from here to Key West,
Breakfast is ready - the johnnycake’s done,
Then do up the dishes and on with the fun!
We’ll get out the games or go for a walk,
Or bake bread or make fudge or just sit and talk
About the good times and the long years gone by,
While we wait for the turkey and Mom’s apple pie.
Then eat ‘til we’re stuffed, then more games, then bed,
And dream how we’ll spend the time still ahead:
Assuming we all get past Y2K fear
And all make it through the millennium year,
Let’s make it a point to take some of our time
And spend it together; let’s age like fine wine.
Let’s go places, do things, let’s get out and roam,
Let’s e-mail and write and talk on the phone;
Let’s grow up together, keep memories bright,
Let’s have a good time, then “to all, a good night.”
Wishing you bright stars and holiday cheer,
Wishing you love. Wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here – The Sequel; Christmas 2004 by Linda S. Schmidt
(sung to the tune of “Some Beach”)
Christmas is coming and we’ve started humming
And singing the carols that speak of His night.
Out in the living room, seems like all afternoon
We trimmed the tree and we strung up the lights.
But back in the northland, the cold winds will blow,
The weatherman says that it’s going to snow;
Here I see roses bloom, sunshine all afternoon,
Sometimes it’s just not fair.
That it’s so nice.…down here.
Skating and bright red sleds, snowmen and feather beds,
Pompoms on hats and warm mittens and boots;
Ice castles, angel wings, parades, a million things,
Things I remember from back in my youth.
Sometimes I think of the ice and the snow,
The pretty flakes falling and faces aglow,
And just for a minute, I wish myself in it,
Breathing that frosty air;
But it’s so cold…up there.
We think of you sadly, all shivering madly,
When winter roars in like a big polar bear;
Instead, come and visit us; go on and get a bus,
Pack up your luggage, get out of your chair!
Come celebrate good times, and be of good cheer!
Come down where it’s sunny! Don’t have any fear -
We’ll be here with open arms, Scrabble and fudge and bars
Ready to eat when you come up the stair.
We’ll wait…..right here.
All of our fam-i-ly gathered beneath the tree
Sends you all wishes for dreams that come true.
Hope you are doing well, and we just want to tell
All of you out there, that we all love you.
We miss you all madly, we hope soon to hear
That you’ll come and visit, sometime this year.
Come down to Dublin town, we’ll show you all around,
Come breathe the salty air.
It’s so great….down here.
Long walks on beaches white, snow crabs and fires at night,
Cinnamon buns, pies and Johnnycake, too;
Flowers and whales in sight, oceans and City lights,
We’ll play some games and tell tales that are true.
So come down and see us and we’ll have a ball,
You can be sure that we miss you all!
Good luck and Blessed Be, Shalom and Peace to thee,
God bless you all this year.
Wish you…were here.

Christmas Blessings
by Linda S. Schmidt – Christmas 2011
Bows and flows of ribbons there,
And ice cold castles in the square
Christmas wrapping everywhere,
We think of you this Day.
For now you’re all so far away,
We won’t see you on Christmas Day,
But blessings we will send your way,
May angels guard your sleep.
Smiles and piles of presents here,
Stockings hung for Christmas cheer,
Lights shine out so bright and clear,
We think of you this Day.
So think of us on Christmas night,
We hope your days are gay and bright,
We hope that everything thing goes right,
For you and yours this year.
Games and flames and Christmas trees,
Happy, gleaming, memories
Of snow and sleds and songs and skis,
We think of you this Day.
Sometimes the way was long and drear,
Sometimes we even shed a tear,
But soon it will be the New Year
We’ll start anew this Day.
May angels drop their blessings down
From starry skies upon your town,
And may great love for all abound,
This blessed Christmas Day.
So, Peace on Earth, good will to all!
Once in a while give us a call!
Or come see us - we’ll have a ball!
And dance the night away.
So, to you, this night so bright,
From Pat and Linda, Will and Mike,
From Tico on his brand new trike,
Alana and Roxann -
We wish you joy, we wish you luck,
We wish you love and health and pluck,
We wish you fudge and Christmas duck,
We wish you all were here.
