Note to Workshop Chair:  Each student will need at least half a table, preferably their own table, and access to electricity.  We will need 2 extra tables for experimentation with paints and messy stuff, so you may want to bring a plastic tarp to protect the tables and/or rug. We will also need about 5 irons and ironing surfaces for the workshop.

Materials Fee:  I will bring Topstitching needles, Mistyfuse, foil & foil glue, Bonding Agent 007, painted Lite Steam a Seam II, Totally Stable, stencils & rubbings, Shiva Paintstiks, fabric paints, and some sheer fabrics, threads and fibers for use as needed. Supply fee $20.

Other Stuff You Need to Bring:  (Yes, you really need this stuff!)

Fabrics:  We will be doing a number of small projects, not completing any one thing, so bring:·
  • 10 or so small (10” x 12” or so) pieces of cotton prints, solids, batiks and dyed fabrics you don’t mind cutting up and experimenting with.
  • Bring one set (10” x 12”) of 4 coordinating fabrics for a project on cutwork.
  • Bring some small pieces of sheer fabrics (tulle, laces, sheer ribbons, organzas, cheap polyester or silk scarves) that coordinate with one of the cotton base fabrics - that can be ripped up to create new fabric, along with a matching color of tulle, a little sparkly yarn and metallic thread in the same color.
  • Freezer paper
  • Tracing Paper - the kind you use to trace a picture with, not mark garments with
  • Glue Stick
  • Scotch Tape
  • Package of Solvy – regular or heavy weight, not ultra weight
  • Embroidery hoop 6-8” in diameter (preferably a thin embroidery hoop to fit under your darning foot)
  • Pencil & fine point permanent marker - preferably Ultra Fine Point Sharpie - available at Office Depot
  • Sewing machine and supplies, including regular, open toe & darning foot for your machine.  Be sure to bring the power cord and foot peal, as well as an extension cord and plug strip, just in case.
  • Extra bobbins for your machine, and extra bobbin case for heavy threads, if you have one.
  • “Wonder” invisible thread for sewing machine, plus neutral regular thread for piecing
  • Lots of metallic and/or rayon thread, Sliver thread, fun stuff, plus normal thread for piecing.
  • Water soluble marker.
  • Sewer’s Ease or Sewer’s Aide (clear fluid for lubricating thread) (optional)
  • Scissors for paper and fabric
  • Package of Lite Steam a Seam II or equivalent
  • Rotary cutter, board and ruler
  • Pins – extra fine glasshead pins are my favorites
  • Plastic drinking straw and thread spool holder if you have one
  • Stiletto if you have one  (this is a sharp pointy thing with a handle); seam ripper or tweezers if you don’t
  • Parchment paper

There is vitality, a life-force, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through another medium. It will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is…It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. - Martha Graham

"When the eye, the hand, and the heart come together, that's when you get the greatest art." - David Hockney
