People in Places

In this class, I will demonstrate the creation of a small landscape based on one of my patterns, then the student will work from his/her own photograph to construct and embellish their creation, whether it be a landscape, seascape, peoplescape, or garment panel. This is an artistic adventure – come and explore your creative side, and use whatever techniques necessary to create your realistic landscape.

Materials I provide:  I cannot know what you will need, but I will bring fabric paints, fabric to paint on, Puff Paint, Paintstiks, metallic paint powders, glitter glue, Lutradur, Size 100 Topstitching needle, chalk pastels, watercolor pencils, MistyFuse, foil, cellophane, sheer fabrics, and Bonding Agent 007 for a supply fee of $20.

Note to Workshop Chair:  Each student will need at least half a table (a full one is better), and access to electricity.  We will need about 5 irons/ironing surfaces for the class, and 2 extra tables for fabric painting as needed.  You may want to supply a plastic tarp for the tables/rugs, just in case.

Note to Student:  Please note that I can’t know what techniques your particular photo will require, so the following supply list is - at best - a guess, with a few contingencies thrown in.
  • Fabrics:  whatever fabrics you think are appropriate for the scene you want to create.  I find that tie-dyed fabrics with built-in shadows work well for garments, and it makes the project MUCH easier if you have a hand-painted sky.  Be sure to have fabrics of varying value - dark to light, warm to cool, some shiny scraps for water, maybe netting, lace, lamé, transparent fabrics, silk, satin scraps.  You might want printed flowers and rocks, or ocean.
  • Photo or Two – preferably of a favorite place, preferably one you took yourself- NOT a copyrighted one!!!) that you wish to recreate in fabric
  • Freezer paper
  • Tracing paper – the kind you trace through, not the garment kind; preferably both the regular kind of tracing paper and mylar tracing paper, one side frosted (available at art supply stores)
  • Glue Stick, Scotch Tape
  • Stiletto (if you have one), or tweezers
  • Spray starch or spray sizing (optional)
  • Package of Totally Stable
  • White garbage bag
  • Apron or wear old clothes
  • Paint brushes and 5-6 plastic cups for paints
  • Package of Solvy (normal weight or heavy weight, NOT Ultra Solvy)
  • Lite Steam a Seam II  or equivalent
  • Embroidery hoop about 6-8” in diameter or so that will fit under your darning foot
  • Pencil & fine point permanent markers - preferably Ultra Fine Sharpie and Micron Pigma fine line .01 size.  You will need both kinds, and you might want to get the whole little set of Pigma size .01 fine line fabric markers
  • Dixon washout cloth marker and/or Mark B Gone water soluble marker
  • Sewing machine and supplies, including regular, open toe & darning foot for your machine - don't forget the cord and foot pedal
  • YLI “Wonder” invisible thread for sewing machine (thickness .004), plus neutral regular thread for piecing
  • A few spools of metallic and/or rayon or Sliver thread, in colors suitable to make a tree and fairy hair
  • Sewer’s Ease or Sewer’s Aide (clear fluid for lubricating thread)
  • Scissors for paper and fabric
  • Rotary cutter, board and ruler
  • Pins, seam ripper, sewing machine needles, extra bobbins and heavy thread bobbin case for your machine if you have one
  • Matches, a candle and candle holder, a pie plate and some water

There is vitality, a life-force, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through another medium. It will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is…It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. - Martha Graham

"When the eye, the hand, and the heart come together, that's when you get the greatest art." - David Hockney
