Fantasy Falls

Come explore the depths of the forest and make this small, lovely waterfall, learning techniques that you can use to make full-size landscapes thereafter.  This quilt class shows you how to make burnt-edge applique trees; puff paint trees with Lutradur leaves; a waterfall of fabric, roving and Angelina fiber; a running stream of heated sheer fabrics, melted painted cellophane, and iridescent cracked ice; and rocks made of Tyvek and Puff Paint; all set off with a sheer ribbon border/binding.   A sewing machine is optional, but not necessary, as you can pin it all down in class and take it home to sew.

Fantasy Falls – Supply fee of $20 includes full instructions and pattern, Puff Painted tree and rocks, Tyvek; iridescent cracked ice; roving, Mistyfuse; Lutradur; Totally Stable, Angelina fiber, cellophane; use of fabric paints, metallic paint powders, Shiva paint sticks, sheer fabrics as needed, and glitter glues.

Note to Workshop Chair: We will need about 5 irons & ironing surfaces for the class, a couple of plug strips and cords, and two extra tables for painting and other esoteric activities. You might want a couple of cheap plastic tarps if you need to protect rugs and/or tables.

Fabrics:
  • One small piece or fat quarter of dark foresty fabric – hand dyed, batik, painted, or just convincing as a dark forest background
  • One small piece of printed flowers you can fussy cut wildflowers or greenery (you just need a couple of inches of this)
  • Some pieces of sheer or transparent fabrics such as white sparkle organza, white shimmer perle or opalescent organdie
  • Small pieces of blue and/or white fabric for water, possibly water print, but any blue and white fabrics will do for the stream underlying sheer fabrics.

Other stuff - required: (Yes, you really need this stuff!)
  • Glue stick
  • A sheet of Lite Steam a Seam II or equivalent
  • One piece of tracing paper (the kind you see through to trace designs)

There is vitality, a life-force, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through another medium. It will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is…It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. - Martha Graham

"When the eye, the hand, and the heart come together, that's when you get the greatest art." - David Hockney
